Tobacco Wars - Al Amir Vs. Layalina |

Friday, November 3, 2006 – Inside Hookah hosted a taste test at the Heat Hookah Lounge in Irving, TX. We wanted to let the public decide which brand was a better smoke, Layalina or Al Amir.
Before we give you the results, here’s a little Background: Layalina and Al Amir are both highly regarded mid-priced tobaccos, of comparable quality. Layalina is based in the United Arab Emirates and Al Amir in Saudi Arabia. Both tobaccos have a myriad of flavors. Our staff selected five well-liked flavors (Blackberry, Blueberry, Peach, Raspberry, and Vanilla), available in both brands, and put them to the test! | | | The taste test was set up in a double blind manner – those who staffed the tables and the participants in the test were unaware of which hookah contained which brand of tobacco - so as to prevent bias. In addition, we used 10 brand new Odyssey hookahs donated by Social Smoke (2 for each flavor, 1 per brand), complete with brand new clay bowls and washable hoses. The same amount of tobacco was distributed in each bowl, the hole patters were also the same, and each hookah had one piece of fully lit 33mm Three Kings Charcoal. This ensured a controlled tasting experience. Finally, we also had Jeff – our on staff hookah master, and all around good guy – set up all the hookahs in identical method so as to guarantee the elimination of as many variables as possible. | | And now for the Results: Layalina weighed in at 10 grams, matching Al Amir’s 10 grams and entered the ring. After 5 rounds of going puff for puff with each other, Layalina finally won the match with a win of 4 out of 5 rounds, ending in a fabulous 5th round knock out! Overall feedback indicated that Layalina had thicker smoke, and more genuine flavor than Al Amir. Layalina received an overall rating of 3.45. Al Amir’s rating, however, came in at less impressive 2.9. Our tasters had the following things to say about the flavors: Peach: Winner Layalina Layalina -“sweet [and] natural, remind[s] me of the peach O’s candy.” Al Amir - “Too sweet, artificial, and funny tasting. It seemed to try too hard for its flavor.” Blackberry: Winner Al Amir Layalina -“Can't taste the flavor much.” Al Amir - “mouthwatering candy like the best I’ve tasted all night!” Blueberry: Winner Layalina Layalina – “tastes like fresh blueberries.” Al Amir - “too medicine like.” Vanilla: Winnder Layalina Layalina – “so refreshing!!” Al Amir – “very light, not so tasty.” Raspberry: Winner Layalina Layalina – “tangy, thicker, very smooth.” Al Amir - “less flavor, weak.” | |
