Almost since their beginning, Greek organizations have maintained a mystical and secretive face. All who’ve encountered a Greek organization can’t help but wonder who those people in matching colors with identical funny looking letters are; or how their seemingly unbreakable and deep bond of loyalty and brother – or sister- hood formed. The very next undeniable and obvious observation is the separation between races and sexes in correspondence with the organization.

This article will provide a brief summary of the backgrounds of the two major fraternal organizations, and hopefully shed some light on both the differences and similarities between these organizations; however, there are several organizations that exist outside of the two mentioned below and a wealth of information for anyone interested in knowing more.

While the organizations may be similar they are certainly not one size fits all, hence the large number of organizations. There are social, professional, and religious fraternities and sororities. Within these categories, there are also fraternities and sororities that cater to specific ethnicities. All the organizations have different dates of formation, and have built their own unique histories.

The premise of the formation of these organizations is typically sisterhood, academic excellence, and service in the community. While all of the organizations may have similar, if not the same ideals, they certainly have their own unique criteria for membership. Recruits, or young women interested in joining one of the above organizations typically go through a process that has been coined “Rush.” For the recruits, “rushing” typically includes attending a lot of social events held by the sororities of their interest. For the sororities, rushing provides an opportunity for their organization to impress the recruits. Towards the end of Rush, each recruit chooses the sororities they’d like to join, in order of preference, and the sororities do the same for the recruits. Through a matching system between the lists, the recruits are made an offer by the sorority they were matched with and can choose to accept or reject the offer. The recruits who accept their offers will then begin pledging. After successfully completing their pledge term, which involves exercises in discipline and tests of loyalty, the pledge becomes a member of the organization.
Traditional fraternities are governed by the College Interfraternity Council (CIC), and consist of approximately organizations. These organizations gain new members in the same way that the traditional sororities do. The following is a comprehensive list of the fraternities under the CIC:

Black Greeks
The traditional Greek organizations were formed during a time period in which other races and whites maintained separate lives. In the interest of creating organizations that would foster the values and priorities of the African American community, black greek organizations emerged. These organizations are governed by the National Pan-Hellenic Council, and consist of nine fraternities and sororities (affectionately referred to, by the Black Greek community, as, “The Divine Nine”):

  •  AKA - Alpha Kappa Alpha, AKAs

  • ΔΣΘ - Delta Sigma Theta - Deltas, DST

  • ΣΓΡ - Sigma Gamma Rho, SGRHOS

  • ZΦB - Zeta Phi Beta, "The ZETAS"

  • AΦA - Alpha Phi Alpha"Alphas"

  • ΩΨΦ - Omega Psi Phi, "Ques"

  • ΦBΣ - Phi Beta Sigma"The SIGMAS"

  • KAΨ - Kappa Alpha Psi, "Kappas or Nupes"

  • IΦΘ - Iota Phi Theta, "Iotas"

Black fraternities and sororities each have unique foundations supporting the formation of their organization, and like the Traditional Greeks, these founding principles typically have something to do with academic excellence, community service, and support for each other. Unlike the Traditional Greeks, Black Greeks don’t use “Rush,” to gain new recruits. Instead, Black Greeks are much more secretive. A sorority or fraternity may extend an invitation, via mail, to a desired recruit. For those who are not personally invited, checking the walls of their student union and lecture halls, or knowing someone who’s already a member of their chosen fraternity is the only way to find out when that particular fraternity is holding information meetings. Finding out the specifics of the meeting (ie: where and when) without an invitation can be kind of tricky, as it is an unspoken and unofficial understanding that recruits are not to discuss with anyone which sorority they’re attempting to pledge. Recruits are also cautioned against visiting other organizations’ information sessions as it is taken as insincere and disloyal.

While the recruit is attempting to receive an invitation to pledge, it is their responsibility to attend as many of the organization’s events as they possibly can. Their level of participation at this point is indicative to the fraternity or sorority of the recruit’s commitment to the organization. In addition, recruits are expected to be informed about the history of the organization they’re attempting to join: Their level of knowledge about the organization is viewed as a testament to the individual’s intelligence as well as the strength of their commitment.
